In this month's installment of our Business Spotlight, let's travel on a journey to Washington DC, and take an intimate look at streetwear brand, The Cancerian Ling Collection. This past week, I had an opportunity to sit down and chat with the founder and owner, Maia Garner. Coming from a background of being heavily influenced by the art of both her mother and father, she is using her talents to build a successful streetwear empire. Maia's unique designs, coupled with eye-popping color schemes, give her the ability to produce a clothing line second to none. By pushing the envelope of creativity, The Cancerian Ling Collection is a force to be reckoned with and is bound to make a lasting impression in the streetwear fashion industry.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - How did the idea for your business come about?
Maia Garner
The CancerianLing Collection came from the passion I have for art. I come from a family of artists on both sides of my parents, so art has always been a passion and talent of mine. I started my clothing line because I believe everyone was given talent for a reason. I decided to use mine to benefit my environment. I’ve been sewing since I was 10 years old, starting painting on t-shirts and clothes that made or thrifted. After selling streetwear to my friends and teachers in high school, I realized I can take things a lot further.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - How did you come up with the name of your business?
Maia Garner
My birthday is on July 9th, so my zodiac sign is Cancer. I have done a lot of research on zodiac signs and found that our time of birth is one thing that makes us who we are. Cancerian simply refers to your zodiac sign. "Ling" or "Ling Ling" is an old high school nickname. I started my business in high school, so I figured I can make it my artist name. The Cancerian Ling Collection will consist of make forms of visual art. I plan to have a series of collections and concepts similar to an art exhibit.

Maia Garner
I started selling my shirts during the fall of 2016 in high school.
T-Shirt Wholesaler -Can you describe your business? Location, Size, Number of Employees, Etc?
Maia Garner
I am a small business based in Washington DC. I, Maia Garner, have an in-home studio, where I create all of my products by hand myself.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - What motivates you?
Maia Garner
My city, being the color I am, my supporters, and my clients are all factors that motivate me.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - Can you describe your typical customer?
Maia Garner
I offer a lot of versatile and custom services, so I don't really have a typical customer. Due to the level of creativity offered, my customers always come to me with a million ideas. I love that, because I love original designs.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - What have your biggest challenges been and how have you overcome them?
Maia Garner
The biggest challenge in my business has been staying out of my own way. I overcome this by consistent self-reflection.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - What sets your business apart from the competition?
Maia Garner
My talent, skill level, and passion set me apart from the competition.
T-Shirt Wholesaler - How do you define business success? Is it money? Freedom? Influence? Creative expression? Something Else?
Maia Garner
Business success to me is the connections and the relationships I build with my customers, freedom of creativity, and being able to harmonize my abilities to produce greatness.
